Monumental Del Rio
Mexican Silver and Golden Sheen Obsidian
Art Deco Bracelet

Contact us about this piece.

Among the less celebrated early Taxco maestros, Del Rio's work is characterized by rather classic, geometric designs in which he embeds hardstones, art glass and abalone. Yet from time to time one bumps into examples of his bracelets that are simply astounding - monumental in proportions, in very well executed less-is-more designs and, if one is truly lucky, adorned with perfectly carved sheen obsidian cabochons.

A volcanic product, obsidian forms whenever lava cools down really quickly and turns into a kind of glass that has been shaped since antiquity into sharp blades, jewelry and decorative artifacts. It is a very hard material, difficult to work and requires the skills of a master lapidary to render perfect results. The bracelet offered here has seven gorgeous, big golden sheen obsidian cabochons set in bezels with thick twist-rope ornamentation around them. The depth of color in the stones is amazing and it constantly changes as the light hits the gems in different angles.

Measuring a wearable 7 1/2" long the bracelet is 1 7/8" wide - truly massive and impressive! It weighs 121.2 grams and retains its original safety chain. It is signed with Del Rio's name as well as "HECHO EN MEXICO" "0.925 STERLING", dates in the 1930s-40s and is in excellent vintage condition.
