Miguel Melendez
Mexican Silver and Aqua Gems
Modernist Necklace

Contact us about this piece.

Classically elegant with its free-flowing, minimalist mod lines this necklace showcases the expertise that Miguel Melendez acquired during the long years he spent working for Spratling, the Los Castillo family and Margot de Taxco, whose taller he ended up managing.

Made of sterling silver adorned with faceted, ice blue gems the necklace is a veritable eye-catcher. The stones are open-backed and hand-prong set and they register in the quartz area on my gem tester. They have strong sparkle and their color has a soothing, calming effect as it contrasts beautifully with the warm patina of the silver setting.

The necklace is a wearable 15" long with its medallion adding a 2 1/4" drop and it weighs 36.5 grams. It is signed with Miguel's initial in script above an impressed "TAXCO" as well as "MADE IN MEXICO STERLING" but no Eagle mark, which dates it in the mid-1940s.
