4.5″ long set of Matl style Mexican silver Hair Combs ~ Deco repousse with amethyst

on Sep 8, 2018 in archived

Big, bold, beautiful and masterfully executed, this pair of early Matl style silver and amethyst hair combs dates in the 1920s-40s and probably hails from Mexico City. This type of repoussage that allows you to follow the traces of the silversmith as he/she worked the metal is associated with Matilde Poulat within the Mexican context and even though we tend to attribute it to the Deco period, in actuality and more than anything it expresses the sensitivities of the Arts and Crafts movement. In the duo at hand fleshy repousse and amethysts adorn the crest of lucite combs with warmly glowing patina rendering the relief even more dramatic…

Size/Weight: 4  1/2″ long by 1  1/8″ tall (for the silver part); 2  3/8″ total height for the comb; 68.6 grams (for the set)

Hallmarks / Date: not marked for maker (at least not in the parts that are visible) nor metal content yet tested and guaranteed to be silver; 1920s-40s
