6″ Mexican Deco silver and turquoise quetzal Pin Brooch

on Aug 6, 2020 in Brooches, Mexican and Latin American

Huge, proud and absolutely secure in its exotic beauty, this is one of the biggest quetzal brooches I have seen in the realm of vintage Mexican silver jewelry. An irrefutable statement piece, I can imagine its first owner wearing it on a padded shoulder and basking in the light of the stream of compliments and jealous looks the bird generated. Yet it is not just proportions that attract the eye here – the repoussage is confident and sculptural; the oxidation glorifies the plummage; and please, just note the ingenious way the maestro used hand-etching to differentiate between the big feathers of the wings and tail and the soft, delicate fuzz on the quetzal’s head…
