A contemporary of Matilde Poulat’s, maestro A. Tobias was based in Mexico City as well and worked in the same style of repoussage that Matl is known for. I have watched his jewelry go up in price over the last ten years as he emulated many of Poulat’s original designs yet his creativity and craftsmanship is evident in his own creations as well. The mythical dragon brooch at hand with its bold, stippled repoussage and the sculptural black onyx stone its body is coiled around is such an example. Great detail, generous proportions, oxidation that combines with patina to bestow an impressive three-dimensionality to the beast. Could this be your Mexican… Game of Thrones dragon?
Size/Weight: 2 1/4″ tall by 2 5/8″ wide; 24.7 grams
Hallmarks / Date: “A.TOBIAS” as well as “MEXICO STERLING”; 1930s
Condition: excellent vintage, very impressive as a design with perfect, bold execution of its repoussage, a smooth, glistening onyx stone and no unsightly damage or repairs noted; the pin’s roll-over catch is missing yet the clasp still works as it should and will keep the brooch … pinned in place when you have it on
