Masterfully worked, this vintage Mexican silver repousse brooch was probably made in Mexico City and it is signed by Barrera. We don’t really know much about this maker and his work does not come up very often. Over the years I have had a few pieces by him, always brooches, and I am constantly on the look out for more of his creations. Very much in the Matl style, Barrera’s repoussage is highly detailed, pronounced and exhibits an admirable control over techniques and materials. The bird I am presenting here – I think a quetzal? – is big, bold and impressive…
