With a wing spread of just shy of 3″ this vintage Mexican Deco sterling silver butterfly brooch better help convince spring that it’s time to show up this year! Careful open-work, chasing and oxidation represent the delicate lightness of a live butterfly’s wings but what convinces me once again that there is no way one can get blase when it comes to Mexican silver jewelry is the quite unusual navette adorning the creature’s body! I am not accustomed to seeing Venetian Murano “wedding-cake” glass in this genre but here it is, my first example, and I am thrilled to have come upon it…


Size/Weight: 2 7/8″ wide by 2 1/8″ tall; 18.8 grams

Hallmarks / Date: maker’s initial “L” as well as “MEXICO SILVER”; 1930s-40s

Condition: excellent vintage with beautiful workmanship, great size and amazing patina and, of course, the unexpected Venetian Murano glass navette with the roses; no damage and no repairs noted
