extra wide L.S. Mexican silver foliate by pass Ring

on Oct 9, 2019 in archived

I have always thought of Mexican by pass ring as miniature clamper bracelets – they are almost always wrought in the same designs that their … adult counterparts can be found and quite often made by the same maestros as well. The example here, generously wide and definitely one of the best of its kind, is signed by L.S., a Taxco maestro known for his clampers and his prowess in the art of repoussage. The ring’s foliate decoration is crisp and quite pronounced, its three-dimensionality enhanced with clever oxidation in the recessed surfaces. Stunning…

Size/Weight: sz 8.75 US (relatively adjustable upwards yet I would advise caution as to not damage the ring); face is 1 3/4″ by 7/8″; 8.2 grams

Hallmarks / Date: maker’ s initials “L.S.” as well as “STERLING MEXICO TAXCO” and Eagle 3 assay mark; 1950s-60s

Condition: excellent vintage with very good, crisp detail in the foliate repoussage, great patina and no damage and repairs noted; the oxidation is in very good shape as well except for a couple of small spots were it has worn away yet not in a visually offensive way
