long Pedro Castillo Mexican modernist fish bone dangle Earrings

There is minimalism and then there is … bare bones minimalism – in our case, bare fish bones! Very popular around the middle of the 20th c., fish skeleton jewelry were created by many Taxco maestros, from the “big name” designers to the “less celebrated” ones and by anonymous silversmiths as well. Yet with this set of dangle earrings Pedro Castillo pushed abstraction to its outer limits. There is nothing here that resembles a fish head; nothing that resembles a tail and still, it only takes one look to recognize a fish skeleton. I call that design fluency…

Hallmarks / Date: Pedro Castillo’s conjoined initials as shown as well as “MADE IN MEXICO TAXCO” and “STERLING”; ca 1950

Condition: excellent vintage with great patina, strong, graphic design and no damage or repairs noted – the epitome of minimalism in jewelry design
