It seems to me that this past year has witnessed a love affair bloom between me and the Los Ballesteros workshop! I find myself attracted to exceptional pieces they created and those pieces look like they are being directed to me. Be it hinged bracelets or pendant necklaces, like the example at hand, I happen upon them and I cannot resist. Please take a moment to study the amazing intricacy of the cut-outs that form the raised face of this pendant! Made more dramatic by the deep oxidation applied on the silver sheet that backs it, the designs pop and the faceted amethyst that centers them sparkles with enhanced intensity. There is a series of five pelicans holding fish in their beaks surrounding the gem – an interesting choice for the Los Ballesteros since I am used to seeing it more on Peruvian jewelry of this period. Big, bold, masterfully crafted, the pendant becomes even more desirable because it comes with a Los Ballesteros chain which is not an easy find…
Size/Weight: pendant is 2 5/8″ in diameter (without the ring and bail); it adds a 3 5/16″ drop to the chain; chain itself is 28 3/4″ long; 74.1 grams (for the set)
Hallmarks / Date: both pieces bear the Los Ballesteros logo with the pendant also marked with Eagle 12 assay mark; 1950s-60s for the pendant; the chain might be from the pre-1948 period or of the same age as the pendant but just missing the Eagle
Condition: excellent vintage with great presence, an elaborate, perfectly executed shadowbox design, boasting a big, luscious gem and with its oxidation in great shape; fantastic patina, original Los Ballesteros chain, no damage, no repairs – just fabulous!
