Los Ballesteros Mexican silver tiger’s eye “mask” Pin / Pendant
Exquisitely carved and masterfully set in sterling silver this vintage Mexican combination pin/pendant is signed by the Los Ballesteros workshop and belongs in their “maks” jewelry line. I am not aware of any special warrior corps in the history of the ancient peoples of Mexico that donned deer antlers. For me at least, this piece evokes ancient European wooodland deities like Cernunnos, the Gaelic god “of beasts and wild places”, a “mediator between predator and prey so they might lie down together”. What is ingenious here, however, is the actual choice of stone – the colors in the tiger’s eye bring to mind young deer glistening under the sunlight of an early summer morning…
