massive Casa Prieto Mexican silver jaguar Bracelet with turquoise

on Apr 30, 2019 in archived

Based in Mexico City, Casa Prieto is an early name in the story of Mexico’s 20th c. Silver Renaissance yet we don’t really know much about them. Their output varies in originality, proportions and craftsmanship yet when one catches them at their best moment, the encounter is more than noteworthy! The spectacular bracelet presented here is without any doubt one of those moments. Massive in size, it is wrought out of heavy gauge silver sheet than has been hand-cut to create figural panels, oxidized and adorned with wirework and gorgeous turquoise cabs set in bezels. Representing one of the Aztec elite military bodies, the leopard featured in the two larger links seems alert to its surroundings, its tail curling dramatically, the spots on its body and its mane meticulously chased. Superb, rare and worthy of the best collection…
