Mexican Deco 980 silver Pendant ~ carved sheen obsidian Eagle warrior

on Mar 28, 2020 in archived

There are times when even strong adjectives like “stupendous” and “stunning” are not enough to describe the beauty and power of presence of a piece of jewelry. I think that the early Taxco pendant I am presenting here is one of those instances and it is breath-taking! More of an artifact than an accessory one just dons and goes out, the pendant is of monumental proportions and a very unusual rendition of an Eagle Warrior. Only once in the past, at the beginnings of my career as a Mexican jewelry dealer, did I get a “mask” that was bigger than this one. Yet it did not have the sculptural quality nor the sophisticated silver-work this example exhibits. Carved out of golden sheen obsidian, confident in his military prowess, majestic in his elaborate helmet and collar, the warrior seems to be gathering his inner strength for the challenges ahead…
