mid-century Mexican silver amethyst “mask” Ring

on Aug 8, 2020 in Mexican and Latin American, Rings/earrings

Slick, less-is-more design and a beautifully carved amethyst “mask” make this vintage 1950s Mexican sterling silver ring easy to wear and a real treat for the eye! There is something masculine about the simplicity of the ring itself that is, however, tempered by the delicately soft, slender features of the stone “face”. The amethyst is here semi-translucent and the absence of intense inclusions allows the light to penetrate it and make it look like purple Italian ice…

Size / Weight: sz 8.75 US (re-sizable by your jeweler); face is 7/8″ N-S and 5/8″ E-W; 1/2″ rise; 10.3 grams

Hallmarks / Date: maker’s initials “SCM” as well as “MEXICO”, TAXCO 925″ and Eagle 3 assay mark; 1950s-60s

Condition: very good vintage with a beautiful stone and nicely carved “mask”, great patina, no damage and no repairs noted except for a tiny area of roughness in the amethyst, just at the tip of the “mask’s” nose – you can see it here through the macro lens but it is not noticeable to the naked eye
