Peruzzi style Italian Deco silver griffins and masks Pendant Necklace with sodalite

on May 13, 2019 in archived

For the discerning Thespians and theater-lovers out there a must-have Italian Renaissance Revival pendant necklace in silver feauturing a big sodalite cabochon and three dangling ancient comedy / tragedy masks. Very popular in the first decades of the 20th c. as mementos from one’s Grand Tour, this type of jewelry is associated with the Peruzzi and Coppini Bros but they were made by a number of Italian workshops and come in all degrees of quality. The casting in the pendant at hand has good detail with the griffins and florals easily readable to the eye; it has been carefully finished as well and set with a stone whose purple blue color is deep and rich. I have paired it with an ornate chain of the same period and style but had to add a newer spring ring clasp to it because the original was missing…

Size/Weight: pendant is just shy of 3 3/8″ long (including the bail) by 1 1/2″ wide; chain is 17 1/4″ long (wearable; should you need more length, it can easily accept a simple sterling extension which I can provide gratis); 27.3 grams (for the set)

Hallmarks / Date: pendant marked “MADE IN ITALY”, tested and guaranteed to be silver of at least .800 purity; same applied to the chain even though it is marked “925” on the spring ring clasp which is a replacement; 1920s-40s

Condition: excellent vintage with very nice casting and strong details in the pendant, a beautiful stone, great patina and no damage nor any repairs noted except for the replaced, yet still vintage, spring ring clasp
