rare 28.5″ Pedro Castillo Mexican silver Chain Necklace ~ heavy hourglass links

on Apr 18, 2019 in archived

Mexican silver chain necklaces bearing the signature of Pedro Castillo are not easy to come upon and in all my years of dealing in Taxco jewelry, I have never seen this specific design before. I don’t even know how to describe the architectural links that make it up – they look to me like hourglasses wrought in sterling with their tops and bottoms removed, held together with sturdy oval connectors made of thick silver wire. This is one of those necklaces that one never tires of, its construction quite impressive, its geometry intense, its weight a welcome, intimate “burden” around the neck. Made by Pedro for Tono some time around the middle of the 20th c., it is a dedicated collector’s dream-come-true…
