In all the years I have been dealing with Mexican silver jewelry I had never seen a Gerardo Lopez zodiac piece! His emulations of Margot de Taxco designs and his imaginative re-combination of her motifs in beautifully made jewelry notwithstanding, it never crossed my mind that I would find an astrological example by him. Yet here it is – beguilingly sculptural, his nude Aphrodite emerges from the sea standing in for the sign of Cancer. Next to the sea shell that keeps her afloat a big crab reaches for the sky. The goddess brings to mind Margot’s representation for the sign of Virgo but here the female figure is more voluptuous – you can almost see the droplets of water as they refract the sunlight on her young, wet body. Size/Weight: 7 1/4″ long (wearable, for the chain bracelet) by 3/8″ wide; charm is a tad above 1 1/2″ in diameter (not including the bail) and adds a 2″ drop to the bracelet; 53.0 grams
Hallmarks / Date: maker’s signature on the charm as well as “STERLING TAXCO” and Eagle 26; the bracelet bears an Aztec warrior stamp encircled by “HECHO EN MEXICO D.F.”; 1950s-60s for the charm while the chain is probably from the pre-1948 period
Condition: excellent vintage with fantastic patina, sculpturality that is further enhanced with oxidation, with no damage and no repairs noted and the added security of a safety chain
