Hector Aguilar Mexican 940 silver foliate Pin Brooch

By in Mexican and Latin American, Pins/brooches |

Light and airy this vintage Hector Aguilar foliate brooch looks almost like an anatomical leaf study in fine, .940 silver. I think it is a fern leaf that is presented in its absolutely bare essentials yet the stem’s playful curve and the graduated lessening of the pin’s width as it proceeds from base to leaf tip impart a pleasantly deceiving illusion of sculpturality. Easy to wear, soothing on the eye, perfect for the time when trees put on their fall colors…   Size / Weight: 3 3/8″ tall by 1 1/4″ wide; 12.5 grams Hallmarks / Date: marked with a combination of hallmarks that Aguilar used in the 1948-1962 period (see Hougart, p.17, A-21 b) Condition: excellent vintage with nice patina and no damage or repairs noted Inv.#14605 SOLD – Thank you! Valentin Vidaurreta Mexican 940 silver Pin Brooch ~ hummingbird

By in archived |

Valentin Vidaurreta is one of the “giants” in Mexico’s 20th c. Silver Renaissance. And even though to most his name does not resonate in the way Spratling’s or Aguilar’s or Antonio’s does, his incredible talent and sublime craftsmanship is behind many of the designs we know, admire and covet as creations of those “big names”. The hummingbird brooch at hand is just one of those examples. Influenced by Deco diktats but at the same time almost alive, the bird flexes its muscles and stretches its body on a downward dive – one can feel the concentration, the warmth of the flesh under the soft feathers, the tension under the skin. Admittedly, hummingbirds don’t usually perform dramatic dives like birds of prey do – it is just the feeling one gets from the brooch as it invites the touch, the running of one’s fingers along...

Mexican Deco 940 silver Clamper Bracelet ~ exquisite Taxco repousse

By in archived |

A mystery maker yet a maestro of the highest caliber the maker of the Deco bracelet I am presenting here loves to work in fine, .940 purity silver and his jewelry is extraordinary. I have had pectorals by him mostly and this bracelet came as a surprise – a very happy one, I should add. Just take a look at the sculptural quality of the floral appliqués as they emerge from the stylized vases next to the hinge; the deep oxidation that renders them even more pronounced and the hand-chased details in the petals and leaves…   Size/Weight: 7″ inner circumference; width between 3  3/4″ and 1  1/8″; 62.4 grams Hallmarks / Date: maker’s initials” JS” as well as “MEXICO TAXCO” and “940”; 1930s-40s Condition: very good vintage with great patina and oxidation, bold, confident repoussage, a nicely tight hinge and no damage...
