Victor Jaimez for Emma Mexican silver two-sided Pendant Necklace

By in archived |

Made by Victor Jaimez for Emma Melendez this amazing two-sided Mexican silver pendant necklace will come to you with its original, hand-made chain. Maestro Jaimez worked for Spratling at Las Delicias and when Emma opened her own workshop / retail shop in 1953, he started creating jewelry for her as well. I don’t know if it’s the patina that makes this pendant so tactile or if it is the effortless way the motifs on its two sides complement each other yet I find it irresistible. The light sage green of the stone inlay is soothing to the eye while the contrast between the glistening abstract sterling overlay and the black oxidized background is stunning…   Size/Weight: pendant is 2  1/4″ tall (without the bail) by 1  7/8″ wide and adds a 2  3/4″ drop to the chain; chain itself is 20 1/2″ long; 48.7 grams Hallmarks / Date: signed for both...

Emma Melendez early Mexican modernist silver Cuff Bracelet in a Hubert Harmon design

By in archived |

Early Taxco modernist sterling silver cuff bracelet bearing the signature of accomplished Mexican designer and silversmith Emma Melendez, this piece is more an arm band than a simple cuff. I believe its design is inspired by Hubert Harmon’s bold creations and it is the ideal piece to bring out the warrior princess hiding within you. Daring, no-fuss yet absolutely commanding presence and a wonderfully mellow patina underscore a modernist less-is-more attitude…   Size/Weight: 7 1/8″ inner circumference (at about mid-height; the cuff is wider than that at the top and narrower at the very bottom to better fit the shape of the arm); width between 3″ at center front and 1  7/8″ at the two ends; 83.8 grams Hallmarks / Date: maker’s signature “EMMA” as well as “STERLING TAXCO”; 1940s Condition: excellent vintage with bold,...

Matching the necklace in the same design that is also available on my site (you actually see the demi together in one of the photos), a vintage Francisco Rivera for Emma Melendez sterling silver bracelet with color-change sapphires that are habitually referred to as alexandrites in Taxco jewelry. This must be a very rare design – in all my years of searching for vintage Mexican pieces, I have never seen it come up before. And it is one of Rivera’s masterpieces – with stunning stones, thick, perfectly patina-ed silver, immaculate finishing and so comfortable to wear, it feels like an extension of your body…   Size/Weight: 7  3/4″ long (wearable); width between 1  11/16″ in the front and just shy of 1″ at the clasp; 84.3 grams Hallmarks / Date: maker’s conjoined initials “FR” as well as “EMMA”, “STERLING...

Rivera for Emma Mexican silver and alexandrite Necklace ~ a Taxco beauty

By in archived |

Divine Francisco Rivera for Emma Melendez sterling silver necklace adorned with simulated alexandrite (color-change corundum) in a modernist floral sprig design that I have never seen before. This is an exceptionally well-made piece – the silver is thick, deeply chased and glows with the warmth of well aged sterling; the stones are stunning, changing their color from a deep amethyst to steely purple when the light hits them, and the craftsmanship is unsurpassable. Rivera at one of his ingenious moments…   Size/Weight: 16  3/4″ long (wearable); floral spray link is 2  1/4″ wide by 2  1/8″ tall; width at the chain is 7/16″; 93.0 grams Hallmarks / Date: maker’s conjoined initials “FR” as shown as well as “EMMA”, “STERLING TAXCO” and a partially stamped Eagle 3 assay mark; also des. no 717; 1950s-60s...
