Classic Mexican Deco silver repousse “masquette” cuff bracelet in the style associated with Maciel and Sanborn’s, this is an unsigned piece and it is quite unusual in its ornamentation. Though the carved “jade” (dyed calcite) mask set at center front is quite often found in this type of jewelry, what is rare is the full-size female figures that flank the stone. This is a very folky representation of a woman wearing a long dress and holding leaves and tendrils (could they be snakes?) in her hands. An early maestro about whom we don’t really know much, Abraham Tobias is known for his Mexico City style repousse jewelry which, more often than not, follow in the design paths opened by Matilde Poulat. It seems, however, that he also excelled in the crafting of stunning cuff bracelets, a form usually associated with Maciel and Sanborn’s. The example at hand is characterized by its graduated width and the fantastic patina that makes the raised surfaces of the repoussage glow against the heavily stippled and textured background.
