monumental Mexican Deco silver carved amethyst mask Pin Brooch

By in archived |

“Masks” are a fundamental design in vintage Mexican jewelry, especially the ones from the so-called “archaeological” period of the Deco years. Carved out of stone or made of molded glass, wrought in silver en repoussage or in overlay, they came to be associated with Mexico and its 20th c. Silver Renaissance. Yet there are “masks” and then, there are “MASKS”! The brooch at hand, signed by a listed but still unidentified maestro, develops around one of the latter. Beautifully and crisply carved out of deep purple amethyst, it is nested in a monumental setting that affords it a spectacular repousse headdress and collar necklace with teardrop amethyst dangles. I don’t know if one could go further overboard – I will just let the photos say the rest…   Size/Weight: 4 3/4″ tall by 1 1/2″ wide; 49.0 grams Hallmarks /...

Mexican Deco multi-row silver and black onyx glass beaded Bracelet

By in archived |

Most commonly found with turquoise cabs this type of Mexican Deco silver hinged bracelets is among the most sought after designs. Made up of rows and rows of repousse semi-spheres and overlaid with additional rows of bezel-set stone or glass cabochons, they are a pleasure to wear and they have a powerful visual impact. The medium-width example I am presenting here is rather more difficult to come upon because the cabs are made of black glass. When one thinks about it, what color combination is more Deco than silver and black?   Size/Weight: 7″ inner circumference; 1 1/8″ wide; 54.8 grams Hallmarks / Date: simply marked “MEXICO SILVER”; pre-1948 Condition: excellent vintage – I don’t even see any of the light dings that can usually be found in these bracelets around their perimeter – with nice patina, all the black cabs securely in place,...

classic Mexican Deco silver and “jade” bead Necklace

By in archived |

Habitually referred to as “Mexican jade” the green stone beads in this early Deco necklace are in fact dyed calcite. They are alternated with hand-made sterling beads to form a classy, timelessly elegant choker that, in our case, is also generous enough in length. I love the color variation in the striations of the stone and the tell-tale signs of the silversmith’s hand as he worked the silver beads. All strung on metal chain (it could be silver but I don’t have enough space to properly test), all of the same diameter more or less, all in excellent condition…   Size/Weight: 17 1/8″ long (wearable; once clasped, it becomes a little roomier approx. 17 5/8″); diameter of silver beads 1/2″; diameter of stone beads slightly bigger or similar; 82.8 grams Hallmarks / Date: simply marked “SILVER MEXICO”; 1920s-30s Condition:...

Classic early Deco Mexican silver repousse bracelet, its two hinged parts consisting of several rows of repousse semi-spheres dotted with bezel-set amethyst cabochons. This is an iconic design and it comes in several widths – the rarity in the example presented here is that in addition to the small stones, there is a series of three big amethysts applied on the vertical that dissects the front “wing” in two.
