Deco French Indochina silver repousse Brooch ~ figural

$110.00

Made in one of the countries of mainland South-east Asia which were, at the time, under French colonial control, this silver repousse brooch bespeaks the level of craftsmanship local silversmiths had attained and their attention to composition and design execution. Hand-crafted during the first decades of the 20th c., I believe, the brooch is characteristic of the style and techniques that flourished in that area of the world. Minutely etched repoussage with crisp delineation in the scene's different elements and careful finishing along with the patina of a long, well-lived life bestow a sculpturality which makes each component stand out: the mother and child in the foreground, the temples left and right and the bridge right behind them and in the background the lush foliage of trees...

Size / Weight: just a tad above 2 1/2" long by 1 5/8" tall; 17.9 grams

Hallmarks / Date: maker's logo as shown as well as "MADE IN INDOCHINA" and "SILVER"; 1920s-40s

Condition: excellent vintage with beautiful craftsmanship and a richly detailed figural design, having nice patina and good size, with no damage and no repairs noted

Inv# 13976
