Erika Hult de Corral, the award-winning modernist Taxco designer who studied in the Parson’s School of Design in Paris and worked with Sigi Pineda and Enrique Ledesma, is one of the few exceptions for which I will cross the 1980 terminus in my jewelry selection. de Corral came into her own in the 1960s and 1970s, a bit later than most of the Taxco maestros, and her creative streak took her well into the 1980s. Brilliant when she is truly inspired, she feels at home with modernist, abstract designs and some of her brutalist pieces I am in love with. The ring at hand, sweet yet with so much character, brings asymmetry together with a bit of brutalism but all is conquered by the stunning dark blue of the flat-cut lapis lazuli…
