One of the oldest Mexican workshops and possibly the longest surviving one, the Los Ballesteros are prolific and very versatile in their creative streak. They worked in many styles within the context of Mexico's 20th c. Silver Renaissance; they emulated other famous designers; they excelled in specific forms and material combinations - in other words, they have never been boring. Their "mask" jewelry holds, however, a special place in my heart. And the massive "beehive" pendant I am presenting is one of their best creations. Centered by a deep purple amethyst "portrait", it is paired here with a sterling chain by a different maker but of the same period and it looks smashing...

Size / Weight: pendant is 2 7/8" tall (without the bail) by 2 3/8" wide; with the bail it adds a 3" drop to the chain; chain itself is 28 1/8" long; 75.6 grams (for the set; pendant alone is 57.7 grams)

Hallmarks / Date: maker's logo as shown on the pendant along with Eagle 42 assay mark; chain is marked "CMC" and "HECHO EN MEXICO 925" alongside Eagle 5 assay mark; 1950s-70s

Condition: excellent vintage with stunning presence, generous weight, a beautifully carved, saturated purple mask, nice patina and no damage or repairs noted
